What a 3D Body Composition Scan Measures

A 3D body composition scan builds a full 3D model of your body from infrared light. Software reads that model to measure your shape and estimate your body fat and lean mass. The scan takes about 35 seconds, with no contact and no radiation.

  • Body fat percentage, with fat mass and lean mass side by side
  • Waist, hip and thigh measurements, plus your waist-to-hip ratio
  • How you compare with national percentiles, and the calories you burn at your activity level

The Fat a Scale Can't Show You

Some fat sits just under your skin, where you can pinch it. Visceral fat sits deeper, wrapped around your liver, pancreas and intestines. You can't see it in a mirror, and a scale can't tell it apart from everything else.

Visceral fat acts a bit like an organ. It releases hormones and inflammatory substances into your body. Too much of it raises your risk of:

  • Heart diseasethrough higher blood pressure, LDL cholesterol and insulin resistance
  • Type 2 diabetesbecause visceral fat is closely tied to insulin resistance, a key driver of the disease
  • Fatty liver diseaseas extra visceral fat pushes more fat into your liver
  • Hormone imbalanceswhich can affect your metabolism and mood

Extra fat around the middle can also pull testosterone down, in men and in women. That can show up as low energy, low libido, changes in mood and lost muscle. Testosterone matters for women too, in smaller amounts. It supports bone strength, libido, mood and muscle tone.

What Your Waist Says About Visceral Fat

Your waist is one of the simplest warning signs. The scan measures it for you, along with your hips and thighs. You don't have to wrestle with a tape measure. Past these lines, your measurements may point to extra visceral fat.

Warning signMenWomen
Waist sizeOver 40 inchesOver 35 inches
Waist-to-hip ratioOver 0.90Over 0.85

Here's the encouraging part. Visceral fat responds well to change. Losing 5 to 10% of your body weight can bring it down by a lot. Better food, regular exercise, steady sleep and less alcohol all help, and a repeat scan shows you the progress.

What You Can Track With a Scan

A scan is worth booking if you want a clear read on any of these:

  • Your body fat percentage
  • Your visceral fat risk
  • How much of you is muscle and how much is fat
  • Changes in your shape as you work toward a goal
  • Body changes tied to your hormones or another health concern

If you're losing weight, the scan shows whether the pounds coming off are fat or muscle. If you're building strength, it shows lean mass the scale hides.

How to Prepare for Your Scan

There's no fasting and no skipping your workout. The scanner isn't affected by what you've eaten or how recently you exercised. You can come in whenever it suits you. What you wear matters most, because the camera reads loose fabric as part of your shape.

  • Wear fitted clothes. Women usually wear a sports bra and leggings. Men usually wear compression shorts and no shirt.
  • Leave loose shirts, baggy shorts and layers at home.
  • Pull long hair up, off your neck and shoulders. A bun, ponytail or clip all work.
  • Wear the same kind of outfit for every scan, so each change you see comes from your body.

What Happens on the Platform

You step onto a round platform that turns slowly through one full circle. Infrared light reads your shape the whole way around, and nothing touches you. About 35 seconds later, you step off, and the software builds your 3D model.

Reading Your Results

Your report shows your body fat, lean mass and measurements, and where you sit against national percentiles. We go through the report with you and point out the numbers that matter for your goal.

What it does bestA fast view of your whole shape, easy to repeatThe most precise single reading, including bone density

DEXA gives the most precise single reading. A 3D scan is fast, uses no radiation and shows your whole body's shape. That makes it easy to scan again and compare. A 2021 review of body scanner studies1 found 3D scanners give repeatable, reliable body measurements. Those measurements line up well with other methods.

How Often to Scan

Every 4 to 6 weeksStyku, the company that makes our scanner, recommends a scan every four to six weeks to track your progress.

If your results raise questions about your hormones, our hormone lab testing can look further. That can include testosterone, thyroid, DHEA and cortisol. Start with a hormone panel matched to your symptoms.

Questions About the 3D Body Scan

Is the 3D body scan safe?

Yes. It uses infrared light, so there's no radiation, and nothing touches you.

Do I need to fast before my scan?

No. The scanner isn't affected by what you've eaten or how recently you exercised.

Does the scan show visceral fat?

It shows the measurements that point to it. Your waist size and waist-to-hip ratio are two of the simplest signs of extra visceral fat.

Is my first scan really free?

Yes. Fill out the short form on our free scan page to claim it.

Can a 3D scan replace a DEXA scan?

It depends on your goal. For a fast view of your shape and tracking change, the 3D scan works well. For the most precise single reading or a bone density check, DEXA is the better test.
