What Hormone Lab Testing Shows

Hormone lab testing is a blood test that measures the hormones tied to your energy, sleep, mood, weight and sex drive. We choose the markers from your symptoms and goals instead of running every test on everyone. Depending on what you're feeling, a panel can include:

Thyroid

TSHFree T4Free T3

Sex hormones

EstradiolProgesteroneTestosteroneSHBGDHEA

Stress

Cortisol

Blood sugar

InsulinFasting glucose

When Feeling Off Has No Clear Cause

Most people who ask about hormone testing have felt off for weeks or months. These are the symptoms that most often lead to a panel:

  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Poor sleep
  • Mood changes or irritability
  • Weight gain or stalled progress
  • Low sex drive
  • Hot flashes or night sweats

Every one of these can have more than one cause. Hormones are one possibility, and stress, sleep, nutrition and other health conditions are others. Testing narrows the list, so you know which ones deserve a closer look.

What Guessing Costs You

Without numbers, it's easy to spend months on fixes that were never going to work. Three things tend to happen when nobody checks:

  • Months on the wrong fixYou try a new supplement, diet or bedtime routine for each symptom, with no way to tell which one helps.
  • One number read on its ownA single result taken out of context can point you somewhere it shouldn't.
  • Symptoms that start to feel normalLow energy and broken sleep slowly become your baseline, and they weigh on work, family and mood.

A short visit and one blood draw give you a starting point you can measure against later.

Trade the guesswork for a plan built on your results.

Timing Can Change Your Result

Some hormones rise and fall through the day, so the time your blood is drawn matters. Testosterone is usually highest in the morning, which is why its test is often drawn between 7 and 10 a.m. Cortisol, the body's main stress hormone, also runs highest in the morning and drops a long way by late afternoon.

7 to 10 a.m.Testosterone and cortisol are usually at their highest.
Around 4 p.m.Cortisol is normally much lower than in the morning.
8 hours fastingA fasting glucose test needs nothing but water beforehand.

Some tests need a little preparation too. Before your draw, we tell you when to go and what to do first, so the time of day doesn't skew your numbers.

How Hormone Lab Testing Works

The process has five steps, and you'll know what's happening at each one.

  1. ConsultationWe go over your symptoms, when they started and your health history.
  2. Lab selectionWe choose the labs that match your symptoms and goals.
  3. Timing guidanceYou get clear instructions on when to have blood drawn.
  4. Results reviewWe go through each result with you and connect it to how you feel.
  5. Next stepsWe map out lifestyle support, a retest or a treatment discussion.

What a Normal Range Can Miss

Your lab report marks each result against a reference range, which is the spread of results seen in large groups of healthy people. MedlinePlus, from the National Library of Medicine, explains that a result outside the range may or may not signal a problem, and a result inside it isn't a guarantee of good health.

That's why we read your results alongside your age, your symptoms and your goals. You'll hear what's in range, what isn't, and what each number may or may not mean for you. Some results point clearly in one direction. Others raise a question that a retest or a few weeks of changes can answer.

Get your numbers read against how you actually feel.

Hormone Testing Questions We Hear Often

Which hormones will you test?

It depends on your symptoms and goals. A panel can include thyroid markers, sex hormones, cortisol, insulin and fasting glucose, and we explain why each one is on your list.

Do I need to fast before my blood draw?

You'll only need to for some tests. A fasting glucose test, for example, needs at least 8 hours with nothing but water. We tell you before your draw if any of yours do.

Why does the time of day matter?

Some hormones change through the day. Testosterone and cortisol usually run highest in the morning, so those draws are often scheduled early.

What if my results are normal but I still feel off?

A result inside the normal range isn't a guarantee of good health. We look at your symptoms alongside the numbers and talk through what to check next.

How long is the first consultation?

It usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, and it's completely confidential.
